Monitoring, Control & SCADA for Marine Research Seawater Systems

Instrumentation, automatic control and data logging that hold a research seawater system within its set-points, protect the stock with fail-safe alarms, and give scientists the continuous, traceable record their work depends on.

The Control System Protects Both the Science and the Stock

A marine research seawater system is only as good as its control. Conditions must be held within tight tolerances for experiments to be valid; a single overnight excursion in temperature, oxygen or salinity can lose months of work or the stock itself. Reynolds & Bauhm designs the instrumentation, PLC/SCADA control and alarm architecture that keep a facility on set-point, fail safely, and log every parameter to a traceable, exportable record — from a single packaged skid up to a multi-system building integrated with the wider BMS.

What We Measure, and Why

ParameterTypical sensorPurpose / interlock
TemperaturePT100 / PT1000Hold set-point; trip heater/chiller; alarm
Dissolved oxygenOptical (luminescent) DOStart oxygenation; low-DO life-safety alarm
pHGlass / ISFET electrodeCO²/alkalinity control; stress alarm
Salinity / conductivityInductive conductivityMake-up control; osmotic-stress alarm
TurbidityNephelometric (NTU)Filter performance; clarity for seagrass

Designed to Fail Safe

Life-Safety Interlocks

Loss of flow, low DO or high temperature trigger graded responses — standby pump start, oxygen injection, audible/SMS alarm — before conditions threaten the stock. Critical functions are hard-wired, not software-only.

Redundancy & Standby

Duty/standby pumps and blowers, UPS-backed controls and, where required, dual-feed power keep the most critical systems running through a single failure.

PLC / SCADA

A PLC runs the control loops; a SCADA HMI gives operators live mimic, trends and set-point control, with role-based access and an audit trail.

SCADA & Automation

Remote Alarming

Out-of-hours alarms by SMS, email or autodialler with escalation, so an excursion at 3am reaches the on-call researcher in time to act.

Data Logging for Research

Every parameter is logged at a configurable interval and exportable (CSV/database) — the continuous, time-stamped record that makes experiments reproducible and auditable.

Integration

Open protocols (Modbus, BACnet, OPC-UA) integrate the seawater plant with the building BMS, lab systems and remote dashboards.
