Laboratory Wastewater Treatment

Research, university, clinical and QC laboratories generate small but chemically diverse and highly variable effluent — acids, alkalis, solvents, heavy metals, reagents and the occasional pathogen — often in one drain. Treating it means segregation, neutralisation and targeted polishing in a compact, often automated, footprint. We design laboratory effluent systems that bring these unpredictable streams reliably within discharge consent.

Small Volume, Big Variability

Laboratory effluent is unpredictable by nature — that is what makes it hard.

A single laboratory drain can receive strong acids and alkalis, organic solvents, dissolved heavy metals, fixatives, disinfectants and spent reagents within the same day, at low and erratic flow. Concentrations swing wildly, pH can move from 1 to 13 between sinks, and some streams are toxic or pathogenic. Conventional continuous treatment sized for steady industrial flow does not suit this duty — lab systems need segregation at source, batch buffering and responsive, often automated treatment that copes with whatever arrives.

How Laboratory Effluent Is Treated

Segregation at source

Separate drainage for incompatible streams (e.g. cyanide, mercury, solvents) prevents dangerous reactions and lets each be treated correctly.

Collection & buffering

Batch collection tanks even out the erratic flow and pH swings so downstream treatment sees a manageable, blendable feed.

pH neutralisation

Automated two-stage acid/alkali dosing brings the highly variable pH to consent — see pH correction.

Metals precipitation

Hydroxide or sulphide precipitation removes dissolved heavy metals from reagent and rinse waste — see precipitation.

Disinfection

Where clinical or microbiological waste is present, a disinfection step provides the required biological barrier.

Automation & monitoring

Compact PLC-controlled skids with pH/level monitoring and alarms run the system reliably in a small plant room.
