How Chemical Dosing Works

1. Storage

Bulk reagents and day tanks are sized from consumption rates and delivery intervals, with materials selected for chemical compatibility — HDPE for acids, rubber-lined steel for corrosives, GRP for oxidants. Secondary containment, vent scrubbing, and level monitoring are integral.

2. Metering

Positive-displacement metering pumps deliver reagent at flow-proportional rates with ±1% accuracy. Duty-standby configuration, stroke-speed control, and calibrated stroke length ensure consistent delivery across turndown ratios from 10:1 to 100:1.

3. Mixing

Rapid, uniform dispersion is achieved through in-line static mixers or mechanical agitators sized for the target velocity gradient and residence time. Injection quills and diffusers are positioned for plug-flow behaviour, preventing short-circuiting and ensuring complete homogenisation.

4. Reaction

The dosed reagent reacts within a defined residence time to achieve the target water-quality parameter — pH, coagulant sweep-floc concentration, or disinfectant residual. Analytical sensors close the control loop, trimming the dose against setpoint to maintain performance as influent conditions vary.

Dosing System Configurations

Progressive Cavity Pumps

Smooth, low-pulsation dosing for viscous and abrasive fluids such as lime milk, matured polymer and conditioned sludge.

  • Flow rates: 1 - 20,000 L/h
  • Handles viscous & abrasive media
  • Low-shear, low-pulsation

Gravimetric Dry Feeders

Loss-in-weight dry-chemical feeders for powdered lime, PAC and dry polymer, metering into an automated make-up tank.

  • Feed rates: 0.5 - 5,000 kg/h
  • Volumetric or gravimetric
  • Dust-controlled hoppers

Types of Dosing System — and How to Choose

A dosing system is more than a pump. The right configuration depends on the reagent, the duty and how the system is delivered to site.

Every dosing system does the same four things — store the reagent, meter it accurately, inject and mix it into the flow, and control it to target. What changes is how many reagents are dosed, how the chemical behaves (corrosive, gassing, abrasive or shear-sensitive) and how the system is packaged. Below are the configurations we design and build, with guidance on where each fits.

Single-Reagent Skid

One reagent, one or two pumps (duty/standby), control and containment on a single frame. The workhorse for pH correction, coagulant or disinfectant dosing — factory wet-tested and ready to connect.

Why Use the Dosing Designer

The engineering case for our Intelligent Dosing System Designer — faster sizing, validated chemistry, accurate bills of materials and fewer commissioning surprises.

See the Advantages

Multi-Reagent / Multi-Point

Several reagents, or one reagent at several injection points, coordinated from one control panel with sequencing and cross-loop trim — for staged neutralisation or coagulant-then-polymer trains.

Multi-Point Systems

Polymer Make-Up & Dosing

Automated wetting, ageing and dilution of flocculant polymer feeding a low-shear dosing pump — make-up and dose interlocked so the pump never runs on immature or empty solution.

Polymer Dosing

Containerised Dosing Plant

A complete dosing plant room in a weatherproof, bunded container with full automation — sited outdoors with minimal civils, ideal for remote or unmanned sites.

Containerised Dosing

Pump Type Matters

Diaphragm metering for clean reagents, peristaltic for gassing/abrasive (lime, hypochlorite), progressive-cavity for viscous polymer — the pump sets the achievable accuracy and turndown.

Engineered to Your Duty

We don’t sell pumps off a shelf — we size storage, pumps, injection, mixing, control and containment to your measured flow, dose and chemistry, then build and commission it.

Design & Build

How the dose is set and held

The correct dose comes from reaction stoichiometry or jar testing, is converted to a pump output with the dosing equations, and is held on target as flow and quality change by the control loop — flow-paced, residual-trim or compound-loop. Get those right and dosing becomes predictable and cheap; the full method is on the chemical dosing hub.
