Technology Selection Criteria by Effluent Character

How engineers match treatment trains to wastewater physics and chemistry.

High COD / BOD >5,000 mg/L

Prioritise anaerobic digestion (UASB, EGSB) for energy recovery, followed by aerobic MBBR or SBR for polishing. Typical HRT: 8–24 h anaerobic, 4–12 h aerobic.

High FOG >200 mg/L

API separator or DAF as primary stage. DAF with coagulant achieves <15 mg/L O&G. Avoid membranes upstream without pre-treatment.

Refractory Organics / APIs

AOP (O3/UV, UV/H2O2 or Photo-Fenton) after biological pre-treatment. Target COD <500 mg/L before AOP to control reagent cost.

Heavy Metals >1 mg/L

Chemical precipitation (hydroxide or sulfide) + lamella clarifier. Polish with GAC or ion exchange for <0.1 mg/L discharge.

Pathogen-Rich Effluent

UV disinfection (40–100 mJ/cm2) or chlorination (CT >15 mgΒ·min/L). UV preferred for reuse; chlorine for remote sites with residual requirement.

Water Reuse Target

MBR + RO + UV/AOP polish. RO recovery 70–85 %; concentrate to evaporation or crystallisation. TDS <500 mg/L for irrigation; <10 mg/L for boiler feed.
