Woven Mill Wastewater Challenges

  • Sizing/desizing: COD 10,000–30,000 mg/L from starch, PVA, CMC.
  • Scouring/bleaching: High alkalinity, waxes, pectins, residual bleach.
  • Mercerizing: Extreme pH and caustic recovery potential.
  • Dyeing/finishing: Dispersed, vat, reactive dyes with salts.
  • Mixed batch flows creating shock loads.
  • Heavy metals from mordant and vat dyes.

Woven Fabric Wastewater Treatment

Treatment Challenge

Woven fabric processing includes sizing, desizing, scouring, bleaching, mercerizing, dyeing, and finishing. Each stage produces distinct effluent characteristics, with desize liquor containing high BOD from starch or PVA sizes and bleaching liquors containing residual hydrogen peroxide and alkali.

High BOD and COD loads requiring biological treatment
Colour removal to meet discharge consent limits
Variable flow and batch processing operations
Water reuse potential for sustainability targets

Our Solution

Reynolds & Bauhm designs treatment systems that handle the variable effluent from multi-stage woven processing. Separate collection and pre-treatment of high-strength desize liquor, combined biological treatment for merged streams, and neutralisation of alkaline bleaching wastewater ensure comprehensive treatment.

Integrated treatment train design
Process-specific chemical optimisation
Automated control with SCADA integration
Compliance with BAT and ZDHC standards

Treatment Process Overview

1

Pre-Treatment

Screening, grit removal, and equalization to protect downstream equipment and balance flows.

2

Chemical Treatment

Coagulation, flocculation, and pH adjustment for solids and colour removal.

3

Biological Treatment

Activated sludge, MBBR, or SBR for BOD and nutrient removal.

4

Polishing & Reuse

Filtration, activated carbon, and optional RO for water recovery.
