Chemical Storage & Containment Design

Storage and containment are where dosing systems pass or fail their safety and compliance audit. We design the bulk and day storage, the bunding, the material selection, the fill and venting arrangements, and the COSHH/DSEAR controls as an integral part of every dosing system — so the reagent is stored safely, contained on spill, and compatible for its whole service life.

Bulk & Day Storage

Sized for delivery logistics and control, in a compatible material.

Bulk storage is sized on consumption and delivery interval (see sizing); a day tank gives a controlled, often diluted, working volume feeding the pumps. Both must be made of a material rated for the reagent at working strength and temperature — the wrong polymer or grade of steel fails slowly and then suddenly.

Bulk tank / silo

Sized for delivery interval with safety margin; level monitoring, high/low alarms and overfill protection.

Day tank

Controlled working volume, often diluted for turndown; isolatable from bulk for maintenance.

Make-up / dilution

Where neat strength is impractical — polymer ageing, acid/caustic dilution — add to water, never the reverse.

Temperature control

Heat-tracing/lagging for reagents that crystallise (caustic, lime) or thicken when cold.

Bunding & Spill Containment

Contain the worst case, alarm the leak, protect the operator.

  • Bund to 110% of the largest vessel (or 25% of aggregate, whichever is greater)
  • Chemically compatible bund lining/coating for the stored reagent
  • Leak detection in the bund and at pumps, alarmed to SCADA
  • No shared bund for incompatible reagents (acid + hypochlorite → chlorine gas)
  • Sealed, kerbed fill area with spill containment at the delivery point
  • Self-bunded tanks or skid drip-trays where a separate bund isn't practical

Segregate incompatibles

Acids and hypochlorite must never share containment — a mixed spill liberates chlorine gas. Segregate storage, bunds and fill points, and label clearly.

Fill safety

Dedicated, labelled, keyed fill points with overfill alarm/cut-out prevent the classic wrong-tank delivery incident.

Safety & Regulatory Design

COSHH, DSEAR and operator protection built in, not bolted on.

Operator safety

Emergency eyewash and shower within reach; PPE storage; safe sampling and maintenance access.

Venting & fume control

Tank venting, vapour scrubbing or absorption for volatile reagents; gas detection where needed.

DSEAR / ATEX

Zoning and rated equipment where reagents are flammable or form explosive atmospheres — see ATEX.

COSHH & labelling

Substance assessment, signage, SDS access and compatible-storage matrix as part of the design pack.
