High-BOD Brewery Wastewater Treatment

This is an illustrative scenario showing how Reynolds & Bauhm equipment can be configured for this application. Every site has unique requirements — contact us for a solution tailored to your specific wastewater characteristics.

Process Requirements & Constraints

Regional brewery producing 850 m3/day of process wastewater with COD 4,200 mg/L, BOD 2,800 mg/L, TSS 1,200 mg/L, and variable pH 4.5-9.5 due to CIP cycles. Effluent must meet sewer discharge standards of COD <500 mg/L and BOD <300 mg/L.

Treatment Approach

Step-by-step process configuration from raw wastewater to compliant discharge.

01

Screening & Equalization

6 mm drum screen removes spent grain and packaging debris. Equalization tank with 16-hour retention balances flows and pH between production and CIP cycles.

02

DAF Pretreatment

DAF system with pressurised dissolved air flotation removes suspended solids, fats, and hop resins. Ferric chloride coagulant and anionic polymer achieve 85% TSS removal.

03

MBBR Biological Treatment

Two-stage MBBR with 65% fill ratio achieves 92% COD removal. Aeration at 4.5 mg/L DO. HRT 18 hours. Biofilm carriers handle variable organic loads without sludge bulking.

04

Secondary Clarification

Lamella clarifier separates biological sludge from MBBR effluent. Recycled activated sludge maintains biomass concentration. Clarified effluent TSS <30 mg/L.

05

Screw Press Dewatering

Multi-disc screw press thickens waste biological sludge from 1.2% to 18% solids. Low energy consumption at 1.2 kWh/tonne. Cake suitable for agricultural land application.
