Choosing piping standards and materials by industry

Every industry converges on a familiar set of piping codes and materials shaped by its fluids, temperatures, pressures and regulatory regime — oil & gas leans on API 5L line pipe and ASME B31.3, water utilities on ductile iron and HDPE, pharma on ASME BPE stainless, power on ASME B31.1. Knowing the sector's default standards and material families is the quickest route to a defensible first specification before detailed design refines it.

Selection basis & standards

  • Standards are the dimensional and design codes the sector specifies (ASME B36.10M/B36.19M, API 5L, ASTM A106/A312/A333, EN, ISO) for the listed service.
  • Materials are the common grades for the sector's temperature, pressure and corrosivity — carbon and alloy steels, stainless and duplex, and non-metallics.
  • Temperature and pressure envelopes bound the typical service so the right schedule, rating class and material class can be chosen.

These are industry-typical defaults for orientation, drawn from the reference database — the governing project specification and process design conditions always take precedence.
