Selecting a pump by duty, service and material

Pump selection starts with the duty point — the flow and head the system demands — and the fluid. Each pump family occupies a characteristic region of the flow/head map, and within each family specific manufacturer models cover narrow envelopes. This tool screens both levels: it suggests specific models whose published flow/head envelope brackets your duty, and shows the pump family that suits, so you arrive at a shortlist quickly.

Selection basis & standards

  • Duty fit: the required flow and head are matched against each model's Min/Max envelope; models are ranked by how centred the duty point sits in their range.
  • Family & configuration to recognised standards — API 610 / ISO 13709 (OH/BB/VS), EN 733, ISO 2858 / 5199, submersible, fire (NFPA 20) and metering (API 675).
  • Material of construction by service — cast iron / bronze for clean water, SS316 / duplex / super-duplex for seawater and corrosives, abrasion-resistant alloys for slurry — with seal type and plan, speed, IP rating and motor power tabulated per model.

Model envelopes, materials and standards come from the engineering reference database. Final hydraulic selection must be confirmed against the manufacturer's pump curve, NPSH-available, fluid properties and the project specification.
