neutralisation Chemicals

Caustic soda (NaOH) is the most common neutralising agent for acidic wastewater due to its high reactivity and solubility. Lime (CaO or Ca\(OH\)₂) is lower cost but produces more sludge. Sulphuric or hydrochloric acid neutralizes alkaline wastewater. For weakly acidic effluents, soda ash (Na₂CO₃) provides milder buffering. Chemical selection depends on cost, availability, handling safety, and downstream process compatibility.

  • NaOH: Fast reaction, high solubility, higher cost
  • Lime: Low cost, sludge production, slower reaction
  • H₂SO₄ / HCl: For high-pH neutralisation
  • Soda ash: Mild buffering, good for weak acids

Design Considerations

pH neutralisation systems require rapid mixing with adequate retention time (typically 5-15 minutes) for complete reaction. Online pH monitoring with automated chemical dosing provides the most stable effluent pH. Batch neutralisation tanks are simpler but produce more variable effluent. Two-stage neutralisation (coarse + fine) improves control for highly variable influents. Always provide a minimum 10-20% safety factor on chemical storage capacity.
