Pulp & Paper Mills

Water treatment solutions for pulp and paper operations. Manage high COD, fibre, lignin, and colour from pulping, bleaching, and papermaking processes.

Pulp & Paper Wastewater Treatment

Comprehensive effluent solutions for kraft mills, TMP plants, deinking facilities and paper machines

Challenging Effluent Characteristics

Pulp and paper mills generate large-volume wastewater with high organic content (BOD 500-3,000 mg/L), suspended solids, colour, and in some cases adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) from bleaching processes. Reynolds & Bauhm provides integrated treatment solutions that address these specific challenges while enabling water recycling and fibre recovery to improve mill feasibility.

Large flow handling (up to 50,000 m³/day)
Fibre recovery for reuse in production
Colour and lignin removal
AOX reduction for bleach plant effluents

Mill-Specific Solutions

Our treatment approach varies by mill type. Kraft mills benefit from anaerobic pre-treatment for high-strength condensates followed by aerobic polishing. TMP and groundwood facilities need efficient suspended solids removal. Deinking plants require special handling of stickies and ink solids. We design each system around your specific fibre line, water balance, and discharge requirements.

Anaerobic pre-treatment for condensates
DAF for fibre and filler recovery
Activated sludge with nutrient control
Tertiary filtration for water reuse

Pulp & Paper Mill Types

Kraft Mills

Integrated kraft pulp mills with pulping, bleaching, and recovery operations generating high-BOD condensates and bleach plant effluents.

TMP & Groundwood

Thermomechanical and groundwood pulping facilities with fibre-laden whitewater loops requiring efficient solids separation.

Deinking Plants

Recycled fibre processing with special challenges including ink solids, stickies, and variable furnish composition.

Paper Machines

Paper and board machine whitewater systems with fibre, filler, and coating colour recovery requirements.

Environmental Standards for Pulp & Paper

EPA Effluent Guidelines 40 CFR 430

US EPA regulations covering BOD, TSS, and AOX discharge limits for pulp, paper, and paperboard mills by subcategory.

EU BREF Document

Best Available Techniques Reference Document for the production of pulp, paper, and board under the Industrial Emissions Directive.

IPPC Directive 2008/1/EC

Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control requirements for pulp and paper installations above capacity thresholds.

ISO 14001 Environmental Management

Environmental management system certification commonly required by major paper industry customers and stakeholders.
