Understanding the Calculation

Mass Balance

Spent grain at 80% moisture contains 800 kg water per tonne. Dewatering to 30% solids removes ~333 kg of water per tonne of raw grain.

Transport Reduction

With ~40% mass reduction, fewer truck loads are required. At /km over 50 km, benefits compound quickly for high-volume breweries.

Biogas Value

Dewatered grain still contains volatile solids. Anaerobic digestion can yield 300-400 m³ biogas per tonne VS, displacing purchased natural gas.
