Entrance-flow (through-flow) screens — the screening surface sits across the flow and water passes straight through the media. The traveling, band, drum and bar-screen family used at the largest intakes.
Intake Screening for Water & Desalination Plants
In an entrance-flow (through-flow) screen the screening surface is set perpendicular to the bulk flow, so water passes through it from one face to the other and debris is intercepted on the upstream side. It is the classic, highest-capacity screening arrangement and covers the traveling-water, band, drum and bar-screen families used at the largest SWRO and cooling-water intakes.
Screen perpendicular to the flow
Endless mesh belt, vertical lift, spray-washed at the top — common at large SWRO intakes.
A continuous loop on a fixed lower sprocket; through, centre or dual-flow variants.
Cylindrical drum, flow entering radially — compact where space is limited.
Coarse first stage (50–150 mm), always upstream of fine screens.
Debris carried up and washed into a trough; Ristroph fish-handling option.
Largest throughput per unit — the default for very high-flow intakes.
| Type | Description | Desalination application |
|---|---|---|
| Traveling water screens | Endless mesh belt, vertical lift, backwashed at top | Common at large SWRO intakes |
| Band screens | Continuous loop on a fixed lower sprocket | High-capacity intakes; through/centre/dual-flow |
| Drum screens | Cylindrical drum, flow enters radially | Where space is limited |
| Bar screens / trash racks | Coarse first stage, 50–150 mm spacing | Always upstream of fine screens |
