Screw thickeners offer continuous, low-energy sludge thickening without polymer addition in many applications. The rotating screw within a perforated drum conveys sludge while filtrate drains through the screen, producing thickened sludge at 8–15% dry solids from feed concentrations as low as 0.5%.
Unlike gravity belt thickeners, screw thickeners require minimal wash water and operate in a fully enclosed, odour-controlled housing. The slow rotational speed (2–5 rpm) minimises shear on biological flocs, preserving floc structure and improving downstream dewatering performance in centrifuges or filter presses.
